Needy Student Scholarship Fund

The Holmwood Technical High School Guidance Department Scholarship Fund (in its 3rd year) has been renamed "The Robert Lewis Scholarship Fund". This is in honour of a stalwart who was a Guidance Counsellor at Holmwood and who spent most of his adult life helping young people, especially those who attended this noble institution.

Purpose of Scholarship: To help at least one needy student to attend a tertiary institution.

  • Students assisted to date: Mr. Garry Mc Lean (2007: 2nd year at UWI)
  • Miss Tammysue Johnson (2008: 1st year at UWI)
  • Mr. Recy Thomas (2008: 1st year at UWI)

Testimony from Student

Recy Thomas

I am a first year student at the University of The West Indies Mona in the faculty of pure and applied sciences.  In the near future I will become a medical physicist.

I am an immediate past student of the Holmwood Technical high school sixth form program.  This school helped me in my matriculation process both academically and financially.  Thanks to the then guidance and counseling department’s scholarship, now renamed the Robert Lewis scholarship fund.

This assistance makes my University dream a reality and motivates me to continue to excel.

Tammy Sue Johnson (First Year student UWI)

I can clearly remember now, it was in the middle of August and   I was pondering and worried about where I would get the first dollar to finance my way through university (UWI). The Student Loan Bureau  SLB) had previously accepted my application for tuition fees only, but I had no other means of getting any other funds to finance my way through university. I had applied to the Guidance Department for the Guidance Department Scholarship Fund of the Holmwood Technical High School, however I was skeptical of being one of the recipients, so you can imagine my surprise when I got a call from my guidance counsellor, Mrs.P.Sharpe who told me I was one of the recipients.

I was so overwhelmed especially when I was told that I had  recieved fifty thousand dollars ($50,000).The scholarship went a far way in helping me to cover my neccessary expenses, such as my miscellaneous fees, food, clothing and other school related expenses. I am grateful to the Guidance Department at my Alma Mater for the  support. They have enabled me in a significant way to be attaining a solid education, which will better allow me to make a more positive contribution to my country. This scholarship is a means through which needy students can get assistance  in furthering their education and in essence improving their lives and the lives of others, thus making the world a better place.
