Subject: Memo: New Chairperson

Dear Members,

In May of this year former acting chairman of the alumni association, Leo Gilling, resigned from his position as head of the executive branch. Norah Wilkinson who served as deputy chair to Mr. Gilling completed his term in office which officially ended July 31, 2009. Accordingly, elections should have been held during the reunion weekend to fill the vacant Chair. This did not happen however, mainly because the electoral advisory board was not in place at that time. Under the circumstances and constitutionally "The Caucus of Presidents" (which is made up of chapter presidents and vice presidents) exercised its obligation in appointing an interim chairperson.

The new Chairperson is Carol Gordon of Washington DC. Her tenure in office begins on Monday, September 7, 2009 and will continue until formal elections are put in place by the Electoral Advisory Board. In the coming days and weeks Chairwoman Gordon will name and make known a team of members to fill various offices in the association.

Mrs. Gordon brings to the Chair a wealth of experience in leadership and management and the association is expected to benefit from her guidance. There is much work to be done as we continue to build the association and we look forward to each member helping in this process, no matter how small the input.

A few weeks ago the chapter presidents named one member each to serve on the Electoral Advisory Board (EAB). The board is responsible for scheduling and overseeing elections at the executive level. That is a step forward.

We need however to also establish "The Executive Board" which is an important arm of the association. This board serves to regulate all the functions at the central executive level. Because a representative from each chapter will sit on the board, chapter members through their representative will have a direct say in the functions and projects undertaken by the central executive branch. For this reason it is important that the chapter presidents name one of their members to sit on this board as early as possible.

On another note, allow me to clarify a prevailing notion among some members that The Central Executive Branch (CEB) is superior to the chapters. That is not so. The CEB is the coordinating arm of the association with limited centralized functions. The superior power within the association comes from the membership, with each chapter being represented on the executive board. The board in turn regulates all the operations from the central level and may reject or limit any operation proposed by the CEB.

In the next memo to the membership an update will be given on the formation of The Executive Board and contact information for the new Chair will also be given.

Regards,
From the office of The Chair.
